Join us as we kick off Black History Month on Sunday, February 1, with a special art and music showcase featuring the Houston Professional Musicians’ Association (HPMA) and the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (BSNM). The event begins at 2:30 p.m. with HPMA’s first annual Black History Month Festival, highlighting live performances by Tony Copeland, The H-Town Quartet, The Crusaders Experience honoring Joe Sample, and a special appearance by the Kashmere Reunion Stage Band (Thunder Soul). The program will be emceed by Nick Sample, son of the late jazz legend Joe Sample, on what would have been his 85th birthday.

At 4 p.m., BSNM will host the opening reception for its new exhibition, Terms & Conditions: The Promise vs. Reality, on view at POST Houston throughout February. The exhibition explores Black liberation after emancipation through military service, citizenship, and cultural memory, blending historical interpretation with contemporary visual art. Curated by Seba R. Suber, the exhibition features works by more than a dozen contemporary artists and is supported by the Kinder Foundation and POST Houston.
